Verification of Payee: The Next Challenge Is Adoption, Not Compliance

Verification of Payee (VoP) has rapidly become a core component of payment safety across Europe. While the initial focus was understandably on meeting regulatory deadlines under the Instant Payments Regulation, the conversation is now evolving.

Many banks have successfully deployed VoP for online and mobile banking channels. However, a significant gap remains: file-based payment flows. These workflows continue to power many of the highest-value corporate transactions, including supplier payments, treasury operations, payroll, and bulk disbursements. Yet in many markets, they remain outside the scope of consistent payee verification.

This creates both a risk and an opportunity. As fraud schemes such as invoice manipulation and beneficiary fraud continue to evolve, extending verification to file-based payments can significantly improve payment quality, reduce operational risk, and strengthen fraud prevention efforts.

In a recent article we and our partner SEEBURGER explore how the market is moving beyond compliance and into the next phase of Verification of Payee adoption - focusing on operational integration, scalability, and enterprise usability.
